That is the million dollar question that people ask me every day. They all want to know the cost of a cycling around the world tour. We spent a lot of time reading on the internet what others have spent in the past on similar trips to get a good idea of what we will need to budget for. The budget section from TravellingTwo is probably one of the best resources on the web. After several months working on it, here is Cycling El Mundo´s budget.
- Food & accommodation: 27,375 USD
- Activities & Sightseeing (for 2): 6,000 USD
- Extra 1 (Antarctica): 3,500 USD
- Extra 2 (Kilimanjaro Climb): 1,500 USD
TOTAL: 38,375 USD
The budget for the food & accommodation (planning to cook most of the meals and sleeping in the tent) is 25 USD/day for both. Among the activities, we plan to go scuba diving, hiking, safari and other activities that cost money. A cruise to Antarctica and Kilimanjaro climb are budgeted separately (only for Antonio).
Equipment & Maintenance
- Equipment: 12,000 USD
- Bicycle spares (for 2): 1,500 USD
- Gear replacement (for 2): 2,000 USD
TOTAL: 15,500 USD
The equipment budget includes absolutely everything we are taking to the trip. We were very lucky that Amanda worked in an outdoor store the year before we left so we were able to get a lot of discounts on the gear. The gear replacement will cover whatever we need to change (not related to the bike) due to wear or break downs.
- Visas (for 2): 2,200 USD
- Flights & ferries (for 2): 7,000 USD
- Unexpected (for 2): 1,000 USD
TOTAL: 10,200 USD
The visas for the countries we will visit are around 1,200 USD for Amanda (US citizen) and 900 USD for Antonio (Spanish citizen). We will also need to take two long flights: New Zealand to California and South America to South Africa, as well as lots of ferries within different countries.
- Travel Insurance (for 2): 4,000 USD
- Minor health care (for 2): 1,000 USD
TOTAL: 5,000 USD
We decided to purchase only health insurance, as it is too expensive to insure the bike and other gadgets for a long period of time. Also, small health issues are not worth claiming as they will not go over our deductible.
